Following the critical acclaim of the Computer Incarnations for World Peace (SK140CD/LP) compilation, JAZZANOVA’s Sonar Kollektiv and GERD JANSON of Running Back Records team up once again to the greater joy of all the Disco music lovers. Whereas the first opus of Computer Incarnations for World Peace (SK140CD/LP) focussed on the early 80s with a selection of forgotten gems from the new wave era, the second episode shows the recent evolution of Disco music, with 13 tracks from artists and producers who proudly reasserted their love for this kind of music and injected some new blood in the veins of a genre that deserted the dance floors in the 90s.

The ever reliable label Clone come up trumps again with this excellent compilation of mostly Italo disco and jackin’ house from the early to mid 1980s. The real gold is on the first half of the first CD and with brilliantly named artists like Oppenheimer Analysis, Gay Cat Park, Fockewulf 190, Knight Action and Los Angeles TF, how could it fail to be anything but amazing? These tracks are innocent-sounding, camp gems from a time when recording systems were more basic than today’s calculators and being Euro was something to aspire to—without the irony. The best bits are Fockewulf 190’s ‘Body Heat’, which is hip hop Italo overlaid with a chant in not-quite-there-yet English, and ‘Devils Dancers’, which is described quite accurately on Discogs as ‘the best song The Human League never wrote’. Also included is ‘Magical Body’ which despite being familiar to many Italo fans deserves to be introduced to a new audience. The remainder of the first CD is prime chunks of macho ‘80s jack. It’s the kind of stuff where the video would be a black guy with a dodgy moustache, Ray Bans and an oversized pastel jacket dancing in front of lots of bright flourescent colours. But instead of being embarrassing, the tracks retain their charm, punch and power.

Newworldaquarium’s rated longplayer The Dead Bears arrives on CD this February.
Newworldaquarium, aka Jochem Peteri, released the album on Dutch stable Delsin as a 2×12” vinyl in November, quickly earning himself kudos from those-in-the-know behind record shop counters as well as the likes of Efdemin, Josh Wink and Brendon Moeller.
The eleven tracker of downtempo grooves, dub techno and deep spacey house is being re-issued in 4.8 inch format together with four extra tracks including ‘Trespassers’ and ‘NY’, originally released on Planet E in 2002.
Peteri on the album: “The groove simply dissolves in a more beautiful way when it’s a bit slower. My music is stuck halfway between hip hop and house, or kinda like a home baked savoury pie and fine sushi, in a way. It’s too hard to choose between them I guess.”

Jazz Liberatorz are three beatmakers originated from Meaux, France, created in 1999 and consisting of DJ Damage, Dusty and Madhi. They’re finally releasing their first full length album on the french independant label Kif Records. Titled “Clin d’oeil”, their album is a tribute to the golden age of hiphop, taking its strength from the roots of black music and more notably in jazz music. Throughout the album, you can hearr the sound of old jazz fusion records from the 70’s mixed with samples and live instruments on which Jazz Liberatorz have invited la creme de la creme of the independent hiphop soul & jazz scene. Booze-swilling Germans The Wighnomy Brothers issue a new mix CD on Freude am Tanzen. Metawuffmischfelge arrives next month.
The Brothers, aka Robag Wruhme and Sören Bodner, are Jena’s drunken masters of minimal house. Behind the decks the two are a jovial pair, often seen punching the air between tracks with an ever-decreasing bottle of plonk.
Metawuffmischfelge captures some of this, er, spirit with overlapping fragments of tracks from the likes of Agoria, DJ Koze, Mathias Kaden and Tadeo running on and reappearing throughout the mix. Besides the usual minimal house and techno players, there are also selections from Sidsel Endresen & Bugge Wesseltoft and Lisa Gerrard as well as snippets from Robag’s secret stash of samples. The result is a tracklist which looks drunk, too.

For volume one of the two DRUMLESSON albums, that CHRISTIAN PROMMER will produce this year he recorded 10 of his favourite dance classics as Jazz interpretations. Taking his favourite dance tracks of the last two decades and transforming the energy and magic of the originals into a performance of a jazz quartet (piano, drums, perc. and bass) was quite an interesting journey for him.
All started with the idea to record an acoustic version of the DERRICK MAY classic Strings of Life to warm up for the production of his first solo album. He recorded the basic idea some time ago in his new studio on the countryside near Munich. Upright piano played by ROBERTO DI GIOIA and drums by WOLFGANG HAFFNER. Thought of as a “one-off” track for the fun of it, it sat on the shelf for a long time until ALEX BARK of the JAZZANOVA crew, came by and heard the track. Alex and the rest of the crew got so excited about this tune, playing it in their dj sets all over the world, that they soon decided to release a 12″ with this track. Released in May 2007 it was a fast spreading phenomenon. DJs and music fans from all sides of the spectrum got into this track. DERRICK MAY also gave CHRISTIAN PROMMER his thumbs up. The idea of rerecording dance classics did not leave CHRISTIAN PROMMER’s head while he was preparing his debut album for Sonar Kollektiv. Feeling at home in the world between Jazz and Detroit Techno. And here we go – with an outstanding effect!

As Merck’s close draws ever close (we’re sure this is the longest swansong in recording history) they appear to have managed to rope in some fresh blood to bolster their already bursting catalogue. 40 Winks are a Belgian lounge-hop duo and ‘Sound Puzzle’ is their entrée into all things Merck, yet no sooner than the first crisp, crackling beat has freed itself from the compact disc, it’s pretty obvious that they’re going to fit right in. Merck always had a soft spot for hip-hop, and ‘Sound Puzzle’ sees the label go all out in both design and sound. In fact I think this is the most obviously hip-hop album the label has put out, and certainly doesn’t have the idm leaning of Machine Drum or his many copyists. Instead we have a record which reads like a narrative, with full tracks interspersed with the classic hip-hop interlude, and while it might at times sound dangerously close to a Ninja Tune also-ran circa 1998, it keeps the attention throughout. The duo’s lounge leanings are evident from the off, but instead of going all-out coffeetable, there’s a subtle leaning towards the credible end of lounge music - smoky European bars, crackling home movies and girls with knitted scarves… you know what I’m talking about! If you want something to accompany a good cigar and a learn French cassette, I think you’ve found your soundtrack… smooth, baby.
